Service robots are becoming a common feature in our daily lives already and we can expect to see robots helping us at home soon. The latest laundry robots prototypes from Japan are able to wash, dry and fold your clothes for you.

Panasonic demoed the Laundroid robot that will wash, dry and fold all your clothes at the consumer electronics show in Tokyo. The product of collaboration between Panasonic, Daiwa House (Japan’s largest homebuilder) and Seven Dreamers Laboratories, the Laundroid robot washes, dries and perfectly folds clothes.

The lucky owners can simply throw their laundry inside the robot and just presses one button. The laundroid uses image analysis system to scan each item and recognize familiar patterns such as shirts, shorts, trousers and towels. The developers are currently improving the technology to get the robot to also fold socks.

The manufacturer Panasonic says this robot will change people’s lives and allowing them to spend more free time with family and enjoyable activities.

The new model will be available as of spring 2020 and will probably cost about as much as a small car.

The Evolution of Dishwashers

The Evolution of Dishwashers: A Comprehensive Guide to Types and Functionality

In the fast-paced world of modern living, convenience and efficiency have become paramount. Among the household appliances that have undergone remarkable advancements, the dishwasher stands out as a shining example of technology simplifying everyday chores. From their humble beginnings as manually operated devices to the sophisticated and smart machines we see today, dishwashers have transformed the way we clean and maintain our kitchenware. In this article, we will delve into the history, types, and features of dishwashers, shedding light on how they have become an indispensable part of contemporary kitchens.

A Brief History of Dishwashers:

The concept of automating dishwashing dates back centuries. In the 18th century, mechanical devices known as “dishwashing machines” were designed, though they never gained widespread popularity due to their complex mechanisms and limited effectiveness. It wasn’t until the 20th century that dishwashers truly began to take shape.

The first practical dishwasher was invented by Josephine Cochrane in 1886. It featured a wire rack where dishes were placed, and high-pressure water was sprayed onto them. This marked the beginning of a revolution in kitchen cleaning technology. As time progressed, dishwashers evolved, incorporating better water circulation, heating elements, and drying functions.

Types of Dishwashers:

Today, there is a diverse range of dishwashers available to suit varying needs and preferences. Here are some of the most common types:

  1. Built-In Dishwashers: These are the traditional dishwashers that are permanently installed under kitchen counters. They offer a seamless and integrated look, making them a popular choice for modern kitchens. Built-in dishwashers come in standard sizes to fit most kitchen cabinets.
  2. Portable Dishwashers: Designed for smaller kitchens or renters, portable dishwashers are freestanding units on wheels. They can be easily moved and connected to a sink faucet when in use. Although they offer less capacity than built-in models, they provide flexibility for those with limited space.
  3. Drawer Dishwashers: This innovative design features drawers that slide out like traditional drawers, with each drawer acting as a separate dishwasher compartment. These dishwashers are convenient for smaller loads and allow users to run two different cycles simultaneously.
  4. Countertop Dishwashers: Perfect for compact living spaces, countertop dishwashers are small units that sit on your kitchen counter. They are designed to accommodate a limited number of dishes and are directly connected to the sink faucet for water supply and drainage.
  5. Smart Dishwashers: With the rise of smart home technology, dishwashers have also joined the realm of connectivity. Smart dishwashers can be controlled and monitored remotely through smartphone apps. They often feature advanced sensors that optimize water usage, energy consumption, and wash cycles based on the load.

Features and Functionality:

Modern dishwashers come equipped with a plethora of features to enhance cleaning efficiency and convenience:

  1. Multiple Wash Cycles: Dishwashers offer various wash cycles, such as normal, heavy, quick, eco-friendly, and more. These cycles adjust water temperature, pressure, and duration to suit different types of dishes and levels of dirtiness.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient dishwashers are designed to minimize water and energy consumption. Look for dishwashers with ENERGY STAR certification for optimal energy savings.
  3. Adjustable Racks and Tines: Many dishwashers have adjustable racks and tines, allowing you to customize the interior layout to fit larger pots, pans, and odd-shaped items.
  4. Sensor Technology: Advanced sensors detect soil levels and adjust the wash cycle accordingly, ensuring optimal cleaning without wasting resources.
  5. Noise Reduction: Manufacturers have made significant strides in reducing dishwasher noise levels, making it possible to have a conversation or watch TV without disruption during operation.
  6. Drying Options: Some dishwashers offer multiple drying methods, including heated drying, fan-assisted drying, and air drying. These options help ensure dishes are thoroughly dried after the wash cycle.
  7. Child Lock: A safety feature that prevents children from accidentally opening the dishwasher or changing its settings.

Dishwashers have evolved from rudimentary manual devices to technologically advanced appliances that cater to diverse lifestyles and preferences. With a variety of types, features, and functionality, these machines have become a staple in modern kitchens, revolutionizing the way we manage our daily chores. As technology continues to advance, it’s exciting to anticipate how dishwashers will continue to improve and simplify our lives in the years to come.

Troubleshooting Common Dishwasher Problems: A Comprehensive Guide to Repair Solutions

Dishwashers have become indispensable appliances in modern kitchens, offering convenience and efficiency in the post-meal cleanup process. However, like any mechanical device, dishwashers can encounter problems that disrupt their smooth operation. From mysterious leaks to stubbornly dirty dishes, understanding these common issues and their repair solutions can save you time, money, and frustration.

  1. Ineffective Cleaning Performance: Problem: One of the most frequent complaints is a dishwasher’s inability to clean dishes thoroughly, leaving behind residue, food particles, or spots. Solution: This problem often stems from blocked spray arms, clogged filters, or improper loading. Start by cleaning the spray arms using a toothpick or fine wire to dislodge any debris. Next, clean or replace the filters according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Lastly, ensure that dishes are loaded properly, allowing water to reach all surfaces.
  2. Leaking Water: Problem: Discovering water pooling around your dishwasher can be concerning. Leaks may occur due to damaged door gaskets, faulty door latches, or malfunctioning valves. Solution: Inspect the door gasket for cracks, tears, or signs of wear and replace if necessary. Ensure the door latches securely, preventing water from escaping. If the issue persists, check the inlet valve and drain hose connections for leaks, tightening or replacing components as needed.
  3. Noisy Operation: Problem: A dishwasher that sounds like a construction site can disrupt your kitchen’s tranquility. Noises may arise from worn-out bearings, damaged pump assemblies, or foreign objects trapped in the pump or spray arms. Solution: Start by removing any debris that might be causing the noise. If the problem persists, examine the pump and motor assembly for signs of wear and replace if needed. In some cases, tightening loose components or leveling the dishwasher can also alleviate noise issues.
  4. Foul Odors: Problem: Unpleasant odors emanating from your dishwasher can be off-putting. These smells are often caused by the buildup of food particles and grease over time. Solution: Run an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar placed on the top rack to eliminate odors. You can also sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short cycle to further neutralize smells. Regularly cleaning the filter and interior of the dishwasher, along with ensuring proper drainage, can prevent odors from returning.
  5. Dishwasher Won’t Start: Problem: Pressing the start button and receiving no response can be frustrating. This issue might arise from a malfunctioning door switch, faulty control panel, or disrupted power supply. Solution: Check the door latch and switch to ensure they are functioning correctly. If the control panel appears unresponsive, try resetting the dishwasher by turning off the circuit breaker for a few minutes and then turning it back on. If the problem persists, it might require professional assistance to diagnose and repair the underlying electrical issue.
  6. Dishes Not Drying Properly: Problem: Opening your dishwasher to find damp dishes can be disappointing. Poor drying results can be due to a malfunctioning heating element, a problem with the rinse aid dispenser, or improper loading. Solution: Verify that the rinse aid dispenser is adequately filled according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Test the heating element’s functionality by running the dishwasher on the highest heat setting and checking if the dishes come out dry. If the heating element is faulty, it should be replaced by a technician.

While dishwashers provide convenience and efficiency, they can encounter a range of common problems. By familiarizing yourself with these issues and their corresponding solutions, you can save time and money on unnecessary repairs or replacements. Regular maintenance, proper loading techniques, and addressing problems promptly can extend the lifespan of your dishwasher and ensure that it continues to serve you effectively in the kitchen. For complex issues or those requiring technical expertise, consulting a professional appliance repair service is recommended.

HOW TO FIX A WASHING MACHINE THAT SHAKES AND JUMPS

HOW TO FIX A WASHING MACHINE THAT SHAKES AND JUMPS

Years ago, before washing machines were built to be quieter you’d be forgiven for thinking that a Jumbo Jet was taking off in your kitchen. While modern machines are much quieter, problems still arise when machines enter their spin cycle. Although machines can be inclined to move about a bit during a wash cycle the trouble only starts when the machine isn’t sufficiently stable to cope with the rapid spin cycle.

First considerations

The age old technical support question – is it plugged in? doesn’t really apply if you know that the washing machine has been spinning. The same concept applies however. Before developing visions of currency symbols pouring out of your wallet, there is something that you can check. Even if you did have your machine professionally installed and the feet were adjusted, weeks or months of rumbling along can in fact impact on the legs. The legs or feet form the foundation of the stability of your machine and should be the first port of call when instability looms.

Check that the legs are equally levelled out in the space that the machine occupies. It is also possible that the floor is uneven, and the legs need to be altered to align the balance the slope on the floor. Most washing machine legs have lock buts, so the legs should stay in position after they have been stabilised. An enormous proportion of shaking and jumping from washing machine comes from the simple lack of stability when the legs are not aligned.

The Tub dampening straps

Inside your washer there will be four tub dampening straps. The are rubber straps that are attached at the top of the drum tub and to the top of the machine to keep it in place and cushion the strong movement and vibrations, particularly during the spin cycle. When these become stretched or fail completely then the tub will bang against the side of the machine during the spin cycle. It will be exceptionally bad when only one has failed creating an imbalance offered by the other three straps.

It is recommended to replace all four of the straps at the same time so that the balance and equilibrium is optimal after the fix. They are easy to access by removing the top cover on the machine.

Snubber ring, Damper pad and Tub wear pads

Many washing machines have a ring located at the base of the machine which cushions the tub support assembly from the base of the machine. This is called the snubber ring and helps to dampen vibrations during the spin cycle. Some machines have damper pads that perform the same purpose. These two items are made of solid plastic which wears away over time. This is to be expected if they are performing their purpose correctly. When worn completely the tub and the base of the machine will make contact and the machine will shake and jump uncontrollably.

To replace them, you will need to remove the front panel to open the machine. You will then need to remove the front suspension springs, replace the snubber and then reverse the process when you disassembled it. Remember that the suspension springs are tensioned so always ensure that you have protective wear. If you in any doubt, get your local washing machine repair service to send a qualified engineer to replace the parts for you.

Shock absorbers

If you have a front loading machine, you can rest assured that your machine is fitted with shock absorbers. These will be attached to both the tub and base of the frame casing. To replace these, you will have to remove either the front or the rear casing and in some cases possibly both. There are several tell tale signs that there is a problem with the shock absorbers. Visual inspection would indicate a leak or broken components. The machines behaviour when spinning will present a loud knocking or banging noise. If the shock absorbers are failing, then other components in the machine are at major risk of failure due to damage. While you are inspecting the shocks, also ensure that the suspension rings are not wearing too.

While replacement may appear straightforward, you should always remember to disconnect and discharge any power from the machine. If in doubt or the physical stamina required to pull the machine out and open it up is too much, call your local washing machine repair service who will send out an engineer that will complete the repair quickly.

While there are some simple fixes for problems that washing machines present, it is often better to call in a repair service to have a look. Quite often an experienced eye will spot cumulative problems that may have developed as a result of the machine doing the two steps across your kitchen or utility room floor. Addressing the resulting problems at the same time will save you a lot of time, money and anxiety.

Washing Machine Spare Parts in Nairobi

Washing machines consist of various parts that work together to facilitate the washing and spinning of clothes. Here are some common parts found in most washing machines:

  1. Drum: Also known as the tub, the drum is the central compartment where you load your clothes. It rotates during the wash and spin cycles to agitate and rinse the clothes.
  2. Agitator or Pulsator: This part is found in top-loading washing machines and helps to create the agitation required to clean the clothes. It moves back and forth or pulsates to agitate the water and clothes.
  3. Motor: The motor is responsible for powering the drum’s rotation and the various functions of the washing machine, such as agitating, spinning, and draining.
  4. Belt: The belt connects the motor to the drum and enables the transfer of power. It is essential for the rotation of the drum during the wash and spin cycles.
  5. Pump: The pump is responsible for draining the water from the washing machine. It removes the dirty water during the rinse and spin cycles and helps to maintain the proper water levels.
  6. Water Inlet Valve: This valve controls the flow of water into the washing machine. It is connected to the water supply and opens and closes to regulate the water intake during different cycles.
  7. Drain Hose: The drain hose carries the used water from the washing machine and directs it towards the drainage system. It is usually located at the back of the machine.
  8. Control Panel: The control panel is the interface through which you can select different wash programs, adjust settings, and start or stop the washing machine. It includes buttons, dials, and digital displays.
  9. Door or Lid Lock: This safety feature ensures that the door or lid of the washing machine remains securely closed during operation. It prevents accidents and interruptions to the wash cycle.
  10. Detergent Dispenser: The detergent dispenser is a compartment where you can add detergent, fabric softener, or bleach. It releases these cleaning agents at the appropriate times during the wash cycle.
  11. Suspension Springs or Shock Absorbers: These components help to stabilize the drum and reduce vibrations during the spin cycle. They absorb shocks and prevent excessive movement of the washing machine.
  12. Electronic Control Board: The electronic control board is the brain of the washing machine. It controls and coordinates the various functions and cycles based on the user’s selections.

These are just some of the key parts found in washing machines. Different models and brands may have additional components or variations in their design. In case of any issues, it’s important to consult the washing machine’s manual or seek professional assistance for repairs or replacement of these parts.

Washing Machine Fault Diagnosis in Nairobi

In Nairobi, if you are experiencing problems with your washing machine, there are several steps you can take to diagnose the fault before seeking professional repair services. Here is a general guide for washing machine fault diagnosis:

  1. No Power or Failure to Start:
    • Check if the washing machine is properly plugged into the power outlet.
    • Ensure that the power cord is in good condition and not damaged.
    • Test the power outlet by plugging in another device to see if it works.
    • Check if there is a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse in the electrical panel.
    • If none of the above resolves the issue, there may be a problem with the control board or the door/lid switch, and professional assistance may be needed.
  2. Water Supply Issues:
    • Verify that the water faucets supplying the washing machine are fully open.
    • Check the water inlet hoses for any kinks, blockages, or leaks.
    • Remove and clean the inlet screens or filters to ensure proper water flow.
    • If the water supply issue persists, there might be a problem with the water inlet valve, and professional help should be sought.
  3. Drum Not Spinning or Agitating:
    • Ensure that the washing machine is not overloaded with clothes.
    • Check if the belt connecting the motor and drum is intact and not broken or loose.
    • Inspect the agitator or pulsator (in top-loading machines) for any obstructions or damage.
    • If the problem continues, it could be due to a faulty motor, motor control board, or other internal components, and professional repair may be necessary.
  4. Water Leakage:
    • Examine the hoses, connections, and water inlet valve for any signs of leaks.
    • Check the door/lid seal or gasket for wear and tear or improper alignment.
    • Ensure that the drain hose is securely connected and not damaged.
    • If you notice leaks, it’s recommended to seek professional assistance to identify and fix the source of the leakage.
  5. Unusual Noises or Vibrations:
    • Make sure the washing machine is level and stable on the floor.
    • Check for any foreign objects or debris that may have gotten trapped in the drum or pump.
    • Inspect the suspension springs or shock absorbers for damage or wear.
    • If the noise or vibration persists, it could indicate issues with bearings, motor mounts, or other internal components that require professional attention.

Remember, this is a general guide, and specific washing machine models may have unique diagnostic procedures. If you are unable to diagnose or resolve the issue on your own, it is advisable to contact a reputable washing machine repair service in Nairobi for professional assistance. Common Washing machine Problems

Common washing machine problems can vary depending on the specific make and model of the machine. However, some of the most common issues that people encounter with washing machines include:

  1. Failure to Spin or Agitate: This problem can occur due to a malfunctioning motor, worn-out belts, or a faulty lid switch.
  2. Water Leakage: Leaks can occur from various parts of the washing machine, such as the hoses, pump, or tub. It may be caused by loose connections, damaged seals, or worn-out components.
  3. Excessive Noise: Unusual noises during the washing cycle, such as banging, grinding, or squeaking, can indicate problems with the motor, bearings, or belts.
  4. Failure to Start or Power On: If the washing machine doesn’t start or doesn’t respond when you press the power button, it could be due to issues with the control board, door latch, or power supply.
  5. Inadequate Water Supply or Drainage Problems: Problems with water supply valves, clogged filters, or drain pump issues can lead to insufficient water intake or improper drainage during the wash cycle.
  6. Excessive Vibration: Excessive shaking or vibration during the spin cycle can occur due to an unbalanced load, uneven flooring, or problems with the leveling legs.
  7. Foul Odors: Lingering odors in the washing machine can be caused by the accumulation of dirt, detergent residue, or mold and mildew growth inside the drum or rubber gasket.
  8. Error Codes: Modern washing machines often display error codes to indicate specific problems. These codes can range from issues with water levels, temperature sensors, or other components.
  9. Electrical or Wiring Issues: Problems with the electrical connections, faulty wiring, or damaged power cords can cause the washing machine to malfunction or fail to operate.

It’s important to note that some problems can be easily fixed with basic troubleshooting, while others may require professional repair services. If you encounter any persistent or complex issues with your washing machine, it’s recommended to consult a qualified technician for diagnosis and repair.

Washing Machine Spare Parts in Thika

Washing Machine Fault Diagnosis in Thika

In Thika, if you are experiencing problems with your washing machine, there are several steps you can take to diagnose the fault before seeking professional repair services.

If you are unable to diagnose or resolve the issue on your own, it is advisable to contact a reputable washing machine repair service in Thika for professional assistance. Washing Machine Installation in Thika

When it comes to installing a washing machine in Thika, you can follow these steps to ensure a proper and safe installation:

  1. Choose a Location: Select a suitable location in your home for the washing machine installation. Ensure that the area has a sturdy and level floor to prevent vibrations and movement during operation. Also, make sure the location has access to necessary utilities such as water supply and drainage.

How to Fix a Washing Machine That Is Not Turning On

Is your washing machine refusing to start? Don’t panic! A washing machine that is not turning on can be frustrating, but many times, the issue can be resolved with a few simple steps. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the troubleshooting process to get your washing machine up and running again.

Check the Power Supply

The first thing to do when your washing machine won’t turn on is to check the power supply. Make sure the machine is plugged into a working electrical outlet. If it is, try plugging in another device to ensure the outlet is supplying power. If the outlet is not working, check the circuit breaker or fuse box to see if a breaker has been tripped or a fuse blown. Reset or replace as necessary.

Inspect the Power Cord

Inspect the power cord for any visible signs of damage such as cuts, fraying, or exposed wires. If you notice any damage, unplug the machine immediately and replace the cord with a new one. Damaged cords can be hazardous and should not be used.

Check the Door Lock

Many modern washing machines are equipped with a door lock mechanism that prevents the machine from starting if the door is not securely closed. Ensure that the door is fully closed and latched properly. If the door is not closing properly, it may be due to a faulty door lock mechanism that needs to be replaced.

Test the Control Panel

If the power supply and door lock are not the issue, it’s time to check the control panel. Press the power button and listen for any sounds or indications that the machine is responding. If there is no response at all, the control panel or the control board may be faulty and need to be replaced.

Reset the Machine

Sometimes, a simple reset can solve the problem. Unplug the washing machine from the power outlet and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and try turning it on again. This can reset the machine’s internal systems and clear any minor glitches that may be causing the issue.

Call a Professional

If you’ve tried all the above steps and your washing machine still won’t turn on, it may be time to call in a professional technician. They will have the expertise and tools necessary to diagnose and repair more complex issues with the machine. Be sure to choose a reputable repair service with experience working on your specific make and model of washing machine.

Don’t let a washing machine that won’t turn on ruin your day. By following these troubleshooting steps, you can identify and resolve the issue quickly and get back to your laundry routine in no time. Remember to always prioritize safety when working with electrical appliances, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help if needed

Washing Machine Fault Diagnosis

WASHING MACHINE DIAGNOSIS IN NAIROBI

How to Fix a Washing Machine:  Common Washing machine Faults & Problems Washing Machine Fault Diagnosis in Nairobi for all Common washing machine problems can range using too much detergent, to water covering your floor. Some are easy fixes and others may require hiring a professional to diagnose and do the repairs. However, in most cases, with a little bit of troubleshooting you’ll be able to at least have a good idea where the problem originated. There’s never a good time for your clothes washer to act up, but taking action sooner vs. later can help keep a small problem from developing into something far greater. We’ve compiled a list of the most common washer problems to help you troubleshoot and plan your next step of resolving your situation.   Common Washer Problems

  • Washing Machine Won’t Turn On
  • Washing Machine Not Draining Properly
  • Washing Machine Will Not Spin and/or Agitate
  • Washing Machine Leaking Water
  • Washing Machine Does Not Dispense Detergent
  • Washing Machine is Shaking and Moving
  • Washing Machine is Noisy
  • Washing Machine Smells
  • Washing Machine Won’t Finish Cycle

As always, whenever you work on electrical appliances, safety should be a top concern. Remove the power source to the washer before troubleshooting or attempting repairs.   1 – Washer Won’t Turn On If your washing machine doesn’t respond when you turn it on there may be a simple fix. There’s a number of solutions that range for serious to simple, but the best place to begin is with the power supply itself.

  • Power

The first thing to check is if your washing machine is getting power. Using a multimeter check the outlet voltage. If there isn’t electricity flowing into your washer you’ll need to check your household electrical panel to see if any circuit breakers may have been tripped. If there wasn’t a tripped breaker and your outlet isn’t “hot” then the problem may be with the outlet itself. Turn the breaker off and contact a qualified electrician to replace the outlet and troubleshoot the cause.

  • Motor

If the washer’s motor overheated the washer will shut down to allow it to cool before you can start it again. If this happens once or twice it may not be a problem, but if your motor frequently overheats it’s critical to find out what is actually causing this to happen.

  • Lid Switch

Washing machines are designed to stop working when the lid is open. The lid switch is a small plastic piece located under the lid. In order for the switch to activate, the lid must be shut. Check to see if the switch is in good repair and properly positioned.

  • Timer Knob

Some models require the timer knob to line-up exactly with the control panel graphics. If the knob is slightly out of alignment, the washer won’t run. To check this, simply advance the timer and try to restart the washer again.   #2 – Not Draining Properly Drainage problems can range from being as simple as a clog in the drain hose to needing to replace a pump. But one thing is certain, when you have a problem with draining you’ll be very aware . . . the mess on the floor may be your first and only clue!

  • Drain Hose

Many times a clogged drain hose is the reason your washer isn’t draining properly. Remove the hose and visually inspect it for clogs. A garden hose can be used to flush any stubborn blockages from the hose.   Here are some other things to look for: Check the drain hose for kinks. Check any lint filters that may be in or on the drain hose. Are you having problems with the home’s drain system? The drain hose should be above the level of water in the drain tub. Is the standpipe a minimum of 1-1/4″ in diameter? Is the drain hose sealed into the standpipe? If this is the case, back-siphoning can occur. It should never be sealed. The standpipe should be less than 96″ in height.

  • Drain Pump

If you suspect that your drain pump is jammed, you’ll need to drain your tub then disconnect and inspect the hoses for foreign objects. Don’t forget to check the pump inlets. You may need to remove the pump from the washer in order to get a good look. If you are having problems with your pump, there’s a chance that it may have locked up and seized. The motor will continue to run and attempt to turn the pump. If the pump is belt-driven, the belt will burn through or break, there is even a chance that the pulley could break. Things can go from bad to worse if the motor continues to run with tension on the belt, which can cause the motor to seize. Another possible issue could be that the bearings seized on the pump, or it may have become jammed by a pen, coin or sock. It’s also possible that the impeller blades have broken. In most cases, a new pump will fix the problem.

  • Foreign Objects

If items such as socks, pens and coins get wedged between the basket and the tub, or become lodged in the pump, the washer’s ability to drain properly will be greatly reduced and even can come to a full stop. You’ll need to open the cabinet to gain access so that you can search for any obstructions.

  • Detergent

If too much detergent is used there will be far too many suds. Too many suds will prevent the washer from draining in a timely manner.       #3 – Will Not Spin and/or Agitate There’s a number of things that can prevent your washer from spinning correctly. Unfortunately, you’ll most likely need to open the cabinet in order to properly troubleshoot the problem. Let’s start with the easy fixes first, because sometimes the problem is as simple as the washer being in a soak cycle!

  • Too Large of Loads

A washing machine will become unbalanced if there are too many clothes being washed in the same load. An overloaded machine will become unbalanced and not properly spin. This can also occur if the clothes are not evenly distributed within the basket. If this is your problem, you’ll need to adjust the load during the cycle to help your  washer balance. You can do this either by removing all of the clothes and replacing evenly within the basket or simply moving them within the basket so that they are evenly distributed.

  • Switches and Settings

The lid switch is located inside the cabinet near the door frame, and it’s designed as a safety precaution to keep hands from entering a spinning washer basket. A faulty switch will prevent the washer from running. If the switch is bad, it will need to be replaced. You can also check the setting to ensure that the speed selector switch is properly positioned. It should not be set between different speeds.

  • Drain Pump

It’s possible that a foreign object is lodged in the drain pump. You’ll frequently hear a humming sound when the washer is full of water if this is your problem.

  • Belts

A washing machine has a number of belts and as they wear, they can show signs of damage and even break. If you notice a belt that is showing signs of wear, you should replace it with a new one. If your problem was due to a broken belt, be sure the check that the pulley hasn’t seized. The belt may not have been the root problem. If the pulley seized, it will usually cause the belt to break. If you replace the belt, but not fix the pulley, you’ll have the same problem in the very near future.

  • Motor

The main drive motor is responsible for spinning and agitating the basket. The washer motor creates the spinning directly, and frequently with the use of a clutch. Within the washer’s transmission there’s a crank type gear with connecting rods that cause the basket agitate. If there is little or no agitation, the splines that connect the agitator to the drive shaft could be stripped and in need of replacement. In some washers a reversing motor is used. If you notice that your basket spins perfectly in one direction, but in the opposite direction it won’t work all you may need to replace the motor. Unless you are comfortable doing this, it is probably best to contact a professional. A coupler is used to connect the motor to the transmission. Over time, this part will wear and need to be replaced. If you suspect a transmission or clutch issue, it is generally best to contact a professional as these can be relatively complex problems.   #4 – Washer Leaking Water Beyond the mess that a leaking washer makes, the problem doesn’t always mean an expensive repair bill. Many times the solution is an easy fix or an inexpensive part.

  • Drain Hose

When a washer leaks only during the spin cycle the likely cause is the drain hose. Check the connections on the hose to ensure they are secure. Check the condition of the drain hose, it should be free of cracks and damage.  Check the drain hose for any clogs. You might just find your missing sock! Check the drain hose where it attaches to the washer. There should not be any cracks or leakage, if there is, you may be able to cut the end and re-clamp the hose. Although, you may want to consider purchasing a new one.

  • Fill Hose

The fill hoses could also be the culprit. Read our extensive article on fill hoses HERE. Check that the fill hoses are in good repair and are securely in place. However, they should not be over-tightened. Whenever these hoses are removed a new rubber washer should be used when they are being put back in place. If a new rubber washer wasn’t used, the problem could be the washer.

  • Water-Inlet Valve

Check the water-inlet valve for leaks. There may be a build-up of rust or mineral deposits within the valve, or it may be faulty and need to be replaced.

  • Too Much Detergent

If you have hard water and use a water softener, your leakage problem may be the result of over-sudsing. Hot- and soft-water use less detergent to effectively clean than cold- and hard-water. Reducing how much detergent you use may eliminate an over-sudsing issue. When you have too many suds and they “spill over” it may appear that you have a leak. The sudsy overflow can be resolved by reducing the amount of detergent you’re using.

  • Door Seal (front-load)

Front-load washers frequently develop leakage around the door seal as this is a common area for debris to build-up. Over time, the build-up will reach a level where the door will not be able to properly seal and water will be able to seep out. Generally, you can solve this problem by carefully cleaning the seal.

  • Drain Pump

Drain pumps have a seal on the pulley that will often leak due to wear. Many pumps are designed with a weep hole allowing the water to drip out as the seal begins to fail. So, whether you find a small amount of water or a flood near your drain pump, you may have uncovered the source of the leak. The pump will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

  • Drains and Hoses

If you notice intermittent leaking when the washer is flushing, the problem may be with the plastic bleach dispenser. Bleach is an extremely corrosive chemical and it can cause plastic parts from the bleach dispenser to crack or even break off. In which case it will need to be replaced. The use of large amounts of liquid chlorine bleach can pit and rust stainless steel components. Consider using oxygenating bleach. It’s less harsh for your washer, although it should be noted that it’s not as effective at getting your whites bright.

  • Tub

If the tub is the cause of your leak, your options are limited. When a tub develops a hole from rubbing while off balance or other from reasons, the best choice is usually to purchase a new washer.  Replacing the tub usually isn’t cost effective. However, you could try sealing the leak with an epoxy. If nothing else, it may buy you a little time.

  • Tub Seal

The main tub seal is located where the outer tub connects to the transmission. If you suspect that this is your problem it is usually best to contact a professional as it can be a very difficult job. You may want to weigh the pro’s and con’s of replacing the seal vs purchasing a new washer.   #5 – Does Not Dispense Detergent If you have an automatic detergent dispenser there are two common issues that can cause this problem.   The dispenser needs to be cleaned – Clean the dispenser monthly with a cup of warm distilled white vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the dispenser and run the washer thru a regular cycle. Any built-up residue or clogs will be flushed thru and your dispenser should work as good as new. Incorrect product – Using the right product can make all the difference in the world. If your washer was designed for liquid bleach, using a powder bleach can clog the dispenser and lines. Check your owners manual to find the type of product designed for your unit. Tools to repair washing machine #6 – Washer is Shaking and Moving It might seem alarming when your washer is making noises and moving around, but the solution is generally pretty simple.   Not Level If the floor isn’t level your clothes washer will definitely jump around. Many of the wash cycles, such as spin, can easily thru the unit into a shaking and banging mode, and if the washer is sitting on an uneven floor it will even add to the movement.   Fortunately, this is an easy fix. Position the washer on a piece of 3/4″ plywood. You can use shims if needed to bring the plywood to a level surface, but usually the plywood will do the trick.   Washer Feet Improperly Positioned Washing machines are designed to be adjusted to the floor surface so that they sit level and do not rock. The 2 front legs have a leveling mechanism with a lock nut to secure it in place. Adjust each leg to the correct height and tighten the lock to keep the leg from moving. There shouldn’t be any movement in the front 2 legs once they are set.   The back 2 legs may have the same design as the front or they may be self-adjusting. If they are self-adjusting, tilt the washer forward onto it’s front legs so that the rear legs are roughly 3″ in the air. Then set the unit down to allow the legs to automatically adjust.   Load is Unbalanced If your laundry is off balance you’ll need to open the washer and adjust the load. You may need to make a couple of attempts in order to get it balanced again.   Washing too many clothes in a load can exceed the maximum load weight and cause the washer to go off-balance.  Check your owners manual for load size recommendations, but as a general rule, the clothes shouldn’t be packed too tightly allowing them  room to move freely.   #7 – Washer is Noisy A noisy washer could be as simple as a foreign object being somewhere it shouldn’t, or it could be a clue that a part needs to be replaced. First rule out the simple fixes, which are listed below, and then read our extensive article on the causes and solutions for a noisy washer.   Gurgling A gurgling sound could be an indication that something is obstructing the drain line, but not enough to fully clog the hose. Remove the blockage to prevent it from becoming a full blown clog which will most likely cause a flood.   Clicking If you hear a clicking sound you may have an object lodged in the washer drain.  You may have inadvertently missed a coin or other item left in a pocket. Check your drain and remove any foreign objects.   Buzzing or Humming A foreign object may be lodged in your pump if you are hearing a humming or buzzing noise. If an object finds it’s way into the pump it’s not uncommon for the pump to jam. You may need to replace your pump if there was serious damage, but often just removing the object will solve the problem.   #8 – Washer Smells It’s not uncommon for a washer to develop a musty or mildew smell. This can occur either in or around the appliance, and it’s an indication of mold and bacteria growth. The washer tub provides a perfect dark, moist area for mold and bacteria to thrive. All washers develop what is called a “bio-film” which is decaying matter that’s always damp. Some washers are more prone to this build-up than others. Over time it’ll begin to smell and if left untreated, the smell can spread into your laundry. In worst case situations, it can even cause the laundry room and other nearby rooms to smell. Read our article on how to remove this odor from your washer.  A good habit to develop is to clean your washing machine every month, and be on the lookout! Periodically check the area around your washer for mold or mildew. If your walls, cabinets or other areas show signs of mold or mildew growth there may be an issue with moisture that needs to be addressed.   Detergent Too much detergent will create excessive suds and a dirty residue will build within the basket and other washer parts. Use the correct amount of detergent and fabric softener. This is probably the best defense simply because it’s actually limiting the food supply. Temperature Hot water will help dissolve the layer of bio-film. A hot soak or wash on your final load can be a great preventative measure, especially if you prefer washing in cold water. If you have a reoccurring mold problem or you don’t use your washer frequently, you can run a second rinse cycle when you’re doing laundry to help prevent mold and mildew growth. Drain Pump Filter The drain pump filter should be cleaned once a month, but few homeowners perform this task unless there’s a problem. Frequently coins and other small items get caught in this filter and cause the water flow to slow creating an ideal location for mold and mildew growth.   #9 – Washer Won’t Finish Cycle This is an easy problem to troubleshoot. If your washer continues running even after the cycle should have finished, it most likely means that the timer is defective. Remove the control panel and check the timer contacts for corrosion or scorching. A new timer will fix this problem.     Appliance Repair in Nairobi Washing Machine Repair in Nairobi

A Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install a Washing Machine

Installing a washing machine may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a clear set of instructions, it can be a straightforward DIY project. Whether you’re replacing an old machine or setting up a new one, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of installing a washing machine in your home.

Before You Begin:

Before diving into the installation process, there are a few essential things you should consider:

  1. Location: Choose a suitable location for your washing machine. It should be on a level surface and close to water supply and drainage connections.

  2. Safety: Ensure the electricity and water supply to the area are turned off before starting the installation.

  3. Tools and Materials: Gather the necessary tools and materials, including a wrench, pliers, a level, a screwdriver, a bucket, a hose clamp, and a washer/dryer stacking kit (if applicable).

  4. Read the Manual: Always read the manufacturer’s installation instructions that come with your washing machine for specific details.

Step-by-Step Guide to Install a Washing Machine:

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect the Machine

  • Carefully unpack the washing machine and inspect it for any visible damage. Make sure all the parts and accessories are included.

Step 2: Prepare the Space

  • Choose the location for your washing machine and ensure it’s level. You can use a level tool to check this.

Step 3: Connect Water Supply

  • Locate the water supply valves (usually found on the wall behind or next to the machine). Connect the hot and cold water hoses to the corresponding valves. Tighten them using pliers to ensure a secure connection.

Step 4: Attach the Drain Hose

  • Connect the drain hose to the machine’s drain outlet. Secure it in place with a hose clamp.

Step 5: Position the Machine

  • Carefully move the washing machine into its final position. Be cautious not to kink or damage the hoses and ensure the machine is level.

Step 6: Plug in the Machine

  • Plug the washing machine’s power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. Make sure the outlet is suitable for the machine’s power requirements.

Step 7: Test the Connections

  • Turn on the water supply valves and check for any leaks. Ensure that the hoses and connections are secure.

Step 8: Run a Test Cycle

  • Before you start using your washing machine for laundry, run a test cycle without any clothes to make sure it functions correctly.

Step 9: Secure the Drain Hose

  • Ensure the drain hose is securely fastened to the drainage pipe or laundry sink to prevent it from coming loose during operation.

Step 10: Review the Manual

  • Finally, review the manufacturer’s manual for any specific operating instructions or maintenance tips for your washing machine model.

Installing a washing machine can be a rewarding DIY project that saves you time and money. By following this step-by-step guide and adhering to safety precautions, you can have your washing machine up and running in no time, ready to tackle the laundry tasks in your home. If you ever feel unsure about any part of the installation process, don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance to ensure a safe and efficient installation.

They have the expertise and tools to accurately diagnose and repair faults in washing machines.
