Washing Machine Drum Inspection

The drum is the working heart of a washing machine. Every load of laundry is lifted, tumbled, rinsed, and spun inside it, and every other component in the appliance exists to serve it. Because the drum is in constant motion and constant contact with laundry, coins, keys, and underwires, it accumulates damage and wear in ways that no other component does. Washing Machines Tech performs a full drum inspection at every maintenance visit, examining the drum itself, its surface, its motion, and its relationship with the surrounding tub and seals.

The inspection begins with a rotational check. With the machine empty and switched off, the technician rotates the drum slowly by hand through several full turns, feeling for smoothness and listening for sound. A healthy drum turns freely and silently, with only the faint sound of water remaining in the seal. A grinding or rumbling noise indicates failing bearings; a squeaking sound suggests belt or bearing friction; and a knocking sound suggests a loose component, a damaged paddle, or an object trapped between the inner drum and the outer tub. The technician then attempts to lift the drum at its edge, testing for play. Any perceptible up-and-down movement indicates worn drum bearings or a worn spider assembly, and the extent of the movement is recorded.

The surface of the drum is then examined in detail. Stainless steel drums are inspected for dents, which occur when hard objects such as coins are spun at high speed against the metal, and for cracks or holes at the seam and around the rivets that attach the paddles. Any hole in the inner drum is a serious finding, because it allows water into the space between the drums and provides an exit route for small items of laundry, which can then wrap around the heater or jam the drain pump. The perforations in the drum wall are checked for blockage with lint and detergent residue, since blocked holes reduce the efficiency of rinsing and spin extraction.

Each drum hole is also examined for sharp edges or burred metal, which snag clothing and pull threads. The technician runs a fingertip and a fine cloth around the interior surface; a cloth that snags identifies precisely the burr or rough weld that is damaging the household's laundry, and the offending edge is dressed smooth. Corrosion is assessed on drums showing staining, particularly around the weld lines and the door opening, because pitting corrosion eventually perforates the drum wall.

The relationship between the inner drum and the outer tub is checked next. The technician looks into the gap between the drum edge and the gasket for foreign objects, and inspects the rear of the inner drum, where fitted, through any access available, since trapped bra underwires and plastic items are notorious for lodging there and producing a rhythmic scraping noise during rotation. The heater element below the drum, visible from the front or rear depending on the design, is visually examined at the same time for scale build-up, which insulates the element and slows heating.

The drum is finally tested dynamically. The machine is run through a spin cycle, and the technician observes the drum for excessive vibration, out-of-balance movement, and consistent rotational speed. A drum that wobbles visibly or contacts the tub during spin indicates bearing wear, suspension failure, or a counterweight problem, each of which is pursued further in its own dedicated stage of the maintenance programme.

All findings are recorded in the maintenance report, including bearing play measurements, noise observations, and the condition of the drum surface. The drum inspection sets the mechanical agenda for the rest of the visit, because no amount of electrical maintenance can compensate for a drum that is damaged, rough, or loose on its bearings. A drum that passes this inspection cleanly will handle thousands of further loads safely, quietly, and gently on the fabric it is trusted to clean.
