Pressure Switch Testing - Function and Importance of the Pressure Switch

The pressure switch is the safety-critical component that tells the control board when the machine has filled to the required level, when to advance to the wash phase, and when the water has drained away before the spin cycle engages. If the switch fails to signal correctly, the machine may overfill and flood, attempt to spin with water still in the tub, or refuse to advance past the fill stage altogether. Because the switch protects both the household and the machine itself, Washing Machines Tech includes dedicated pressure switch testing in every maintenance schedule, whether or not the owner has reported symptoms.

Preparation and Safe Access

Testing begins with preparation. The technician disconnects the machine from the mains, shuts off the water supply, and drains any residual water from the system to prevent spills during the work. The pressure switch is located by tracing the thin air hose from the lower part of the tub up to the switch body, which is usually mounted on the cabinet frame near the control board. The service panel is removed carefully, and photographs of the wiring arrangement are taken before any connector is detached, ensuring that every terminal can be restored to its correct position during reassembly.

Hose and Chamber Verification

Because the switch only reports what the air hose transmits, the hose is tested first. The technician detaches the hose from the air dome and blows gently through it to confirm that the passage is clear; a blocked hose produces the same symptoms as a failed switch. The hose is then inspected for cracks, brittleness, and moisture inside its bore, since water travelling up the hose toward the switch indicates a defective air dome or an improperly routed line. The air dome itself is cleaned of scale and slime, because even a partial obstruction delays the pressure signal and causes the machine to overfill slightly on every cycle.

Switch Activation Testing

The electrical test follows. Using a hand-held vacuum and pressure pump with a gauge, the technician applies gradual pressure to the switch port while monitoring continuity with a multimeter across each terminal pair. A healthy switch opens and closes its contacts cleanly at the pressure values specified for the model, with no flickering or intermediate states. The activation and release points are recorded and compared against the service limits; a switch that sticks in one position, chatters during transition, or activates far from the rated pressure is condemned and replaced. Membrane switches that have hardened with age are replaced proactively, since their failure mode is sudden and often leads to flooding.

Confirmation Under Real Conditions

The final step is verification under operating conditions. The machine is reassembled, connected, and run through a fill, agitate, drain, and spin sequence while the technician observes the water level transitions and the timing of phase changes. Successful completion of a full cycle without overfill, restart loops, or premature spin confirms that the switch and its signal path are functioning correctly. The measured activation pressures are entered into the maintenance record, forming a baseline for comparison at the next scheduled service and helping Washing Machines Tech identify ageing trends across the appliance fleet.
