Unbalanced Loads: The Primary Culprit
The most frequent cause of a wandering washing machine is an unbalanced load. When clothes clump together on one side of the drum during the spin cycle, they create uneven weight distribution. The machine's drum spins at high speeds, sometimes exceeding 1,000 revolutions per minute, and even a slight imbalance generates significant centrifugal force. This force pushes the entire machine in the direction of the heavy side, causing it to rock and eventually move across the floor.
Heavy items like blankets, towels, or jeans are particularly prone to creating imbalanced loads, especially when washed alone or with only a few other items. The solution is straightforward: distribute clothes evenly around the drum and avoid washing single heavy items by themselves. Mixing large and small items helps maintain balance throughout the cycle.
Improper Leveling and Installation Issues
A washing machine must sit perfectly level to function properly. Manufacturers design these appliances with adjustable feet specifically for this purpose, yet many homeowners skip this crucial installation step. When a machine isn't level, even perfectly balanced loads can cause movement because the drum's spinning motion interacts with gravity in ways that push the machine off-center.
Check your machine's level by placing a spirit level on top of the appliance from front to back and side to side. Most washing machines have adjustable feet that screw in or out to raise or lower each corner. Taking a few minutes to properly level your machine can eliminate walking problems entirely. Additionally, ensure all four feet make solid contact with the floor—even one slightly lifted corner can cause instability.
Worn or Missing Components
Over time, internal components that stabilize the washing machine can wear out. Shock absorbers, suspension springs, and dampening pads all work together to minimize vibration and movement during the spin cycle. When these parts deteriorate, the drum's motion transfers more directly to the machine's frame, causing excessive movement.
Transport bolts present another often-overlooked issue. These bolts secure the drum during shipping and must be removed before the first use. If left in place, they prevent the suspension system from working correctly, leading to intense vibrations and movement. Check your owner's manual to confirm these bolts were removed during installation.
Floor Surface Considerations
The surface beneath your washing machine significantly impacts its stability. Smooth tiles, polished concrete, or worn linoleum provide little friction, allowing even minor vibrations to gradually push the machine across the floor. Older wooden floors may also flex during the spin cycle, amplifying movement.
Anti-vibration pads placed under the machine's feet can dramatically improve stability on slippery surfaces. These inexpensive rubber pads increase friction while also absorbing some vibration, addressing two problems simultaneously.

A worn drum bearing or damaged suspension system needs expert diagnosis and repair.
