Clean the Exterior of the Machine: Washer Maintenance Tip

The exterior of a washing machine is often cleaned only incidentally — wiped when something spills on it, or cleaned as part of a general kitchen or laundry room clean. A more deliberate approach to exterior maintenance protects the cabinet finish, prevents detergent and product buildup from working into control components, and keeps the machine in a condition where developing problems — water staining from seeping hoses, rust at the base, loose control knobs — are visible and can be addressed early.

Areas to Clean

Top Panel

The top panel collects dust, detergent overspill, lint, and — in busy laundry rooms — everything placed on top of the machine during use. Detergent spills left to dry on the panel become sticky and accumulate further dirt. On machines with top-mounted control panels, detergent penetrating around the control knobs or buttons can cause electrical faults in the control board.

Wipe the top panel regularly with a damp microfibre cloth. For dried detergent residue, dampen the cloth with warm water and allow it to soften the deposit before wiping — avoid saturating the area around control buttons or display panels.

Front Panel and Door

The front panel and door glass accumulate fingerprints, detergent splashes, and water marks. Clean with a damp cloth and, for the door glass, a glass cleaner for streak-free results. Avoid spraying any liquid directly onto the machine — always apply to the cloth first.

For stainless steel front panels (common on premium machines), use a stainless steel cleaner applied in the direction of the grain to avoid scratching the brushed finish.

Control Panel and Knobs

This is the most sensitive exterior area. Use a slightly damp cloth — never a wet one — to wipe the control panel surface. Clean around (not over) knobs and buttons. If knobs are removable, pull them off periodically to clean the panel surface and the knob back, where detergent accumulates. Do not use spray cleaners on or near the control panel.

Sides and Base

The sides of the machine are less frequently cleaned but accumulate dust and lint. The base area — particularly the rear corners and feet — accumulates detergent drips, dust, and occasionally moisture from slow leaks. During periodic maintenance when the machine is pulled forward, clean the base and sides thoroughly. Inspect the base for any rust staining or water marks that might indicate a seeping component.

What to Avoid

  • Abrasive cleaners or pads on any painted or coated surface — these permanently scratch the finish
  • Excess water near control panels — moisture penetrating a control board causes corrosion and electrical faults
  • Chemical solvents — these damage paint finishes and plastic components

Clean the exterior weekly during general laundry room cleaning, and do a more thorough clean including the base and sides every 2–3 months when the machine is pulled forward for rear maintenance access.
