Use the Correct Type of Detergent: Washer Maintenance Tip

Washing machine detergent is not universal. Using the wrong type of detergent — specifically, using a conventional high-suds detergent in a High Efficiency (HE) front-loading or top-loading machine — is one of the most common and damaging mistakes washing machine owners make. The consequences range from poor cleaning performance and excessive foam to detergent residue buildup, drainage problems, and long-term mechanical wear.

HE vs. Conventional Detergent

Conventional detergents are formulated for traditional top-loaders that use large volumes of water to dilute and rinse out a high-foam formula. The water volume carries the foam away effectively.

HE (High Efficiency) detergents are formulated for machines that use significantly less water — both front-loaders and modern HE top-loaders. They are low-sudsing by design: the surfactant chemistry produces cleaning action without generating excessive foam. The reduced foam is compatible with the low water volumes these machines use.

When conventional high-suds detergent is used in an HE machine, the low water volume cannot rinse away the foam volume generated. The result is:

  • Persistent foam that the machine cannot clear, triggering extended rinse cycles or overflow protection stops
  • Detergent residue left on laundry, causing skin irritation and fabric stiffness
  • Detergent residue deposited on the drum, gasket, and internal hoses, accelerating the buildup that causes odour
  • In severe cases, foam entering the bearing area or control systems

How to Identify HE Detergent

Look for the HE symbol — a small logo showing the letters “HE” inside a water droplet or circle — on the detergent packaging. This symbol indicates the product is formulated for low-water machines and is safe for front-loaders and HE top-loaders.

Most major detergent brands produce HE-compatible variants. In Nairobi’s retail market, imported brands like Ariel, Persil, and Omo have HE-labelled variants. If you are uncertain about a local or unbranded product, check the foam output — HE detergents produce noticeably less foam than conventional products.

Powder vs. Liquid vs. Capsule

Powder detergent is generally the most economical and effective for heavily soiled loads but requires correct dosing and dissolves less effectively at low temperatures. Undissolved powder leaves residue in the dispenser and drum.

Liquid detergent dissolves readily at all temperatures but leaves more residue in the dispenser and drum over time due to its sticky consistency.

Capsules/pods are convenient and correctly pre-dosed, eliminating overdosing risk, but should be placed directly in the drum rather than the dispenser. They are generally the cleanest option for dispenser maintenance.

Always verify your detergent’s HE compatibility before purchase, and store detergent in a cool, dry location to prevent clumping (powder) or degradation (liquid).
