Why a washing machine drum not rotating smoothly, how to fix

A washing machine drum that turns roughly, jerks, or makes grinding sounds usually has a mechanical fault, a load issue, or a drive-system problem. The good news is that many causes are simple to check first, and you can often fix the problem before it becomes a major repair.

Common causes

The most common reason is an overloaded or badly balanced load, which makes the drum struggle and rotate unevenly. A worn or slipping drive belt can also cause jerky movement, especially if the machine hums but the drum does not move freely. Other likely causes include worn drum bearings, a clogged drain pump, a faulty lid or door switch, a broken motor coupling, or control issues.

Load and balance problems

Start by checking the laundry load, because this is the easiest fix. Heavy blankets, towels, or too many clothes can push the drum out of balance and make it rotate unevenly. Remove some items, spread the rest evenly, and run a short test cycle with a smaller load.

Drive belt issues

If the drum still does not rotate smoothly, inspect the drive belt on belt-driven washers. A worn belt may look cracked, shiny, loose, or stretched, and it can slip on the pulley instead of turning the drum cleanly. If the belt is damaged, replace it with the correct model-specific part and make sure the tension is right.

Drum bearing wear

Worn drum bearings usually cause a rough, grinding, or rumbling sound, and the drum may wobble or feel stiff when turned by hand. This fault is more serious than a belt issue because the drum assembly often has to be partially dismantled to replace the bearings. If the drum feels resistant even with the machine unplugged, bearings are one of the first things to suspect.

Drain and motor faults

A blocked drain pump can also affect drum movement because many washers will not spin properly until water is drained. Check the pump filter for lint, coins, hairpins, or small clothing items that may be slowing the system down. On some models, a faulty motor coupling or a motor that does not slide correctly on its track can also cause jerky or weak drum motion.

Door and control checks

If the machine starts and then stops, the lid switch or door switch may be failing. Washers use this safety switch to confirm that the lid or door is closed before allowing proper drum movement. A defective control board or timer can also interrupt smooth rotation, especially if the problem appears randomly or with error codes.

Step-by-step repair order

  1. Unplug the washer and empty the drum.

  2. Check for overloading or unbalanced laundry.

  3. Spin the drum by hand to feel for roughness, scraping, or resistance.

  4. Inspect the belt, pulley, and visible drive parts if the model allows access.

  5. Clean the drain pump filter and confirm water is draining normally.

  6. Test the door or lid switch if the machine refuses to continue spinning.

  7. If the drum still rotates badly, suspect bearings, motor coupling, or control faults.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the drum grinding is loud, the tub wobbles heavily, the belt keeps breaking, or the machine needs major disassembly. Those symptoms often point to deeper mechanical wear that is not worth forcing. The sooner you stop using the washer, the less chance you have of damaging the motor, pulley, or drum assembly further.

A drum that does not rotate smoothly usually gives clear warning signs: noise, stiffness, slipping, or weak spinning. Start with the simple checks, then move to the belt, pump, switch, and bearings in that order.
